Title :【Question】What insights do young Asian architects learn from Japan’s indigenous knowledge?

  Summary:

With the recent increase in inbound visitors, more foreign tourists are visiting regions of Japan beyond just the urban cities. As a result, there is growing interest in the ways of life found in places that were overlooked during the growth phase of modernization, as well as in the various ingenious solutions and wisdom embedded within those places.

The Asian Cultural Council Hong Kong – Hsin Chong Foundation, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and with the cooperation of the AIA Japan Chapter, has launched a fellowship program that sends young architects from Hong Kong to Japan for a two-month research stay; the first recipient is currently undertaking her residency.

How can the insights learn from Japan’s indigenous knowledge, gained through research on the theme of Japan’s cultural heritage, enrich cultural sensibilities and sharpen design perspective, and contribute to a socio-landscape? Through presentations by two speakers, including a Japanese architect of the same generation, and an exchange of views with commentators, this event aims to provide an opportunity to explore these possibilities from an international perspective.

She has led the studio Architecture as Landscape at the University of Hong Kong and spoken as guest at international platforms, including ARCH:ID Indonesia, Design Shanghai, and Tokyo University of the Arts.

She is a recipient of the Asia Cultural Council Young Architects Fellowship and the DFA Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award. Cynthia is a UK ARB registered architect, RIBA member, and LEED AP, holding degrees from the University of Bath and the University of Hong Kong.

Shiena Hirao:Born in Saitama Prefecture in 1992. She graduated from the Department of Architecture, Tokyo Institute of Technology, in 2017. From 2018 to 2019, she studied as an exchange student at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. She completed her master’s degree at Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2021 and completed the required coursework for a doctoral degree at the Institute of Science Tokyo in 2024. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the Yoshiharu Tsukamoto Laboratory, Institute of Science Tokyo.

Her research focuses on “Migrants Vernacular Architectur” exploring how migrants establish relationships with local communities and environments through architecture. Based primarily in Kamanuma Village, Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture, she engages in rice cultivation, the renovation of traditional vernacular houses, and the thatching and rethatching of traditional roofs. Through these hands-on practices, she investigates forms of architecture that enable both self-reliance and coexistence within local communities.

Her major publications include WindowScape: Scandinavia (Film Art, 2022) and How is Life? (TOTO Publishing, 2023). Selected writings include “Stockholm, Sweden: Public Spaces with Soft Infrastructure in the City of Rocks” (LIXIL, 2019), “A New Yui” (Jūtaku Tokushū / Housing Special, 2022), and “From the Satoyama to the City: Bringing Tool Sheds into Urban Contexts” (Jūtaku Tokushū / Housing Special, 2023).

Hiroe Yoshida is a culturepreneur integrating her practice as an architect, cultural landscape guide, and educator. Founder of 3–lab Architects and faculty at Kyoto University of the Arts and Temple University Japan, she holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science, researching how traditional landscapes embed mechanisms that align human incentives with site care. Through her living lab Sochola, she applies design attunement to transform authentic materials and untapped human skills into democratized craft and spaces. Across all her roles, “guiding” remains at her core.

Michel van Ackere has been Professor in Practice at Meiji University I-AUD since 2024. He received his BA from Brown University in art and architecture history and his M.Arch from Harvard GSD in 1994, where he was awarded the AIA Gold Medal and the Julia Amory Appleton Travelling Fellowship, which funded research on traditional Japanese urbanism at Kyoto University in 1994-1995.
