Summary

The growing interest in Project-Based Learning (PBL) has, without exception, spread to the fields of architecture and urbanism. Furthermore, with the advancement of globalization, many architecture students are visiting various cities across national borders to conduct fieldwork and research, and opportunities to learn by experiencing cities as living textbooks are increasing. In recent years, with the Syracuse University’s Cities Asia Program as a starting point, Meiji University, a QWS academic partner, has been deepening exchanges among the three institutions through multi-layered points of interaction, including its partner institution, Yonsei University. On this occasion, faculty and students from Syracuse University and Yonsei University will visit Japan at roughly the same time. Taking advantage of this opportunity where each group will conduct fieldwork and research in Tokyo, we will host presentations and discussions on their respective findings at QWS.  We aim to use this session as an opportunity to reflect, from an international perspective, on the significance of students learning with mobility between cities, as well as on the characteristics and potentials of Tokyo within the context of Asia, where competition among cities is accelerating.
